Curated tour with Katharina Hillmann
People from many European countries were imprisoned at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. 52,000 prisoners perished in the camp or died immediately after its Liberation on 15 April 1945 as a result of their imprisonment. On the grounds of today’s Bergen-Belsen Memorial, there are several Memorial stones in various languages which, at first glance, could be mistaken for gravestones. Yet there are only a few marked individual graves.
What stories do the Memorial stones on the site tell? Why are there so few individual graves? And what do the symbols depicted and the stones placed on the Memorial stones signify? These and other questions will be explored during the guided tour of the grounds with cultural anthropologist Katharina Hillmann.
The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and takes place outdoors; we therefore recommend weatherproof clothing and footwear. Everyone aged 14 and over is welcome to attend. Admission is free. No booking is required. You are welcome to reserve a place via our booking portal. The meeting point is the information desk in the Memorial’s Documentation Centre.
