Who are we?
The Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation (SnG) is a public-law foundation established by a resolution of the Lower Saxony State Parliament in 2004. The Foundation combines state responsibility with civic engagement in coming to terms with the crimes of National Socialism and commemorating its victims in Lower Saxony. It maintains and develops the Bergen-Belsen Memorial (GBB) and the Wolfenbüttel Prison Memorial as places of remembrance, where the suffering of the victims of National Socialism and the Nazi victims is commemorated, as well as places of learning for future generations.
The Research and Documentation Department is dedicated to researching the history of Bergen-Belsen through its various historical phases. This includes sourcing, cataloguing and indexing historical materials, making archival records available to internal and external users, and processing enquiries from survivors, family members, researchers and other interested groups. In addition to written sources, the Memorial’s collection includes artefacts and video interviews recounting personal life stories.What tasks can you expect?
- Independent organisation of the GBB archive as part of a two-person team, including the contemporary development of the collections and their digital accessibility
- Advising on and processing general and academic enquiries, as well as providing archive material to internal and external users, and assisting visitors
- Conducting academic research and collecting source materials and artefacts relating to the Bergen-Belsen prisoner-of-war camp, concentration camp and Displaced Persons Camp, and to the history of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial; researching and evaluating newly acquired and existing archive materials and collection items
- Academic cataloguing of the Collection
- Researching suitable exhibits for exhibitions (permanent, temporary and special exhibitions) at the Memorial and for external exhibitions; where necessary, organising (international) loan arrangements; clarifying copyright and usage rights
- Participation in the further development of enquiry processing using AI
- Establishing, expanding and maintaining (international) contacts, networks and collaborations with researchers, authorities, institutions, cooperation partners and external firms, as well as participating in collaborative projects and foundation-wide projects, e.g. through the processing and analysis of metadata
- Participation in the planning and implementation of archival education programmes
- Coordinating the deployment and supervising of volunteers, students and freelance/contract staff, as well as coordinating and supervising work placements
- Contributing to the development and operation of the SnG’s Wikibase-based online archive portal, including involvement in the conception, application for and supervision of third-party funded projects
- Strategic and operational support for and involvement in the digital transformation of the memorial from the department’s perspective
What do you bring to the role?
- A completed university degree (Master’s, Magister or equivalent) in Archival Science, Documentation Science, Information Science or comparable disciplines; for those with proven knowledge and experience in the archival sector, a degree in History, Museology or Public History is also acceptable
- Comprehensive specialist knowledge of archival science, in particular collection management, databases and archival information systems
- In-depth knowledge of cataloguing/description and collection preservation
- A keen interest in topics relating to digital transformation and the digital humanities, and a passion for developing and implementing digital processes and projects
- Organisational and teamwork skills, analytical and strategic thinking, and strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Good command of spoken and written English
What else are we looking for in you?
- Knowledge of the history of National Socialism, in particular the history of Nazi persecution and its consequences, the concentration camp system and the handling of the Nazi legacy since 1945
- Professional experience in memorial sites, museums or a comparable field
- Knowledge of current discourse within the memorial landscape
- Initiative, a willingness to experiment, an innovative spirit and the ability to work independently
