Who are we?
The Bergen-Belsen Memorial Centre is run by the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation. Around 30 employees and freelancers work there. It is dedicated to the history of the Bergen-Belsen Prisoner of War Camp, the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp and the Displaced Persons Camp and examines their respective impact. To this end, it organises exhibitions, conducts historical research and looks after and supplements the extensive collections. It offers young people and adults a wide range of educational and outreach activities in both digital and analogue formats. The memorial also includes the learning place M.B. 89 in the neighbouring Lower Saxony barracks. The memorial explicitly adopts multiple perspectives and thematises these in its activities. For several years, we have been working on expanding the opportunities for participation in the culture of remembrance in general and in the programmes offered by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial in particular.
The exhibition at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial dates back to 2007, but since then the state of research into the history of the Bergen-Belsen camps and the content and design requirements for contemporary exhibitions at memorial sites have changed considerably. The "Design for All" exhibition will take these developments into account.What tasks do you expect?
- Content and organisational coordination, preparation and recording of meetings between project management, curators and other individuals and departments involved in the process
- Continuous content-related and organisational meetings with the project management and determination of next steps
- Coordination and preparation of meetings with the various focus groups involved in the development process
- Developing a detailed schedule with the project management and monitoring it
- Coordinating the content and organisation of the competition to select a design agency
- Communication with the design office
- Supporting the design office in the tendering process for elements of the exhibition (audio guide, digital media, etc.)
- Planning, monitoring and managing the available funding; ensuring the proper and economical use of funds
- Assessing complex legal issues, interpreting guidelines and administrative regulations
- Content-related and organisational communication with the Education and Encounters, Communication and Events and Research and Documentation departments on their respective areas of responsibility in the context of the new permanent exhibition
What do you bring to the table?
- Completed university degree in history, history didactics, politics or a comparable humanities subject
- Sound experience in project management
- Proven professional experience in memorial work
- Sound experience in the conception and management of exhibition projects
- Sound knowledge of the history of National Socialism
- Knowledge of current discourses on contemporary exhibitions at Nazi memorials
A high degree of personal responsibility, organisational and communication skills
What else do we want from you?

What tasks await you?
You will curate the new permanent exhibition in a team with the project management and project coordination, an
extended team and various committees from the exhibition's target groups and advisory boards. To this end, you will develop the exhibition's content concept, create discussion templates and write texts for the exhibition. Your tasks will also include planning and designing digital media offerings in the exhibition as well as supporting the Education and Encounters department in the conceptualisation and development of new educational offerings and material. You will carry out document and object research in archives, museums, libraries and other institutions in coordination with the specialist departments. They contribute to the clarification and acquisition of utilisation rights. The preparation and archiving of project results completes your area of responsibility. You will be actively involved in the academic discourse at the memorial centre.
What do you need?
- A university degree (at least M.A. or equivalent) in the field of history, cultural studies, social sciences or education or in another subject relevant to your work
- Sound knowledge of the history of National Socialism, the National Socialist camp system and its aftermath; ideally knowledge of the history of the Bergen-Belsen camps
- Relevant experience in the preparation and realisation of exhibitions
- Knowledge of the discussion on contemporary memorial and educational work
- Experience of working with academic institutions, archives and/or libraries in Germany and abroad

You have a confident manner and a high degree of social competence as well as sensitivity in dealing with visitors and cooperation partners. Your solution-orientated way of working, ability to work under pressure and your sense of responsibility are combined with the ability to work in a team and flexibility. You have intercultural skills. Your good knowledge of written and spoken German, English and one other language as well as the confident use of standard software and the Internet round off your profile as a member of a motivated team.

For the realisation of our educational formats, we are looking for people to accompany various groups through the Bergen-Belsen Memorial. Pupils, young people and adults visit the Bergen-Belsen Memorial as part of guided tours, study days, online seminars and formats lasting several days. Here they learn more about the history of the prisoner of war and concentration camp, the Displaced Persons Camp and the Bergen-Belsen Memorial in a contemporary and methodologically diverse way.
What we would like to see:
- An open and communicative manner
- A respectful and appreciative attitude in dealing with people
- An interest in dealing with historical, social and political issues
- A willingness to self-reflect and question your own points of view
- Experience in the field of education and special needs education and in Education work is an advantage
- Good knowledge of the history of the 20th century, especially National Socialism, is an advantage
- Interest in analysing social and political continuities
- Willingness to undertake further training
- German language skills (at least level B2), further language skills are an advantage
- Ability to deal with conflict and stress management as well as the willingness to acquire a variety of strategies for dealing with challenging situations

The dates serve to introduce the work on site, to discuss your own role as a guide and to acquire didactic and historical basics for teaching local and contextual history. The seminars are followed by the creation of a concept for the realisation of a study day, a 6-hour regular format, at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial.
In preparation for your own concept, the basic training sessions are followed by an observation session at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, where you can accompany experienced colleagues in the realisation of a study day. By individual arrangement, the first independently organised study day will be supervised by the Education and Encounters Department.
The costs for the training, travel and accommodation will be covered by the memorial centre. Participation in all of the above dates is mandatory.
With the exception of the online seminar on 3 June 2026, all of the above dates will take place in person.After successful acceptance of the first specially organised format and corresponding agreement by both contractual partners, a framework agreement will be concluded for further employment on a fee basis.
In the first 12 months after completion of the training programme, participation in at least two further training courses dealing with one's own work at the memorial is mandatory for continued employment. All relevant costs will also be covered.
